Went out for Sushi again as part of a citywide quest to sample all the sushi restaurants in Portland Oregon. My father and I have resolved to blog our adventures this time, because we lose track the details over time.
Simply put, Ichidai is excellent. It's the third time I've been there and the third excellent meal I've had there. The simplicity of the building hides the authentic cuisine inside. Pay close attention or you'll drive right past. The building looks like an insurance dealer or dentists office I guess. Inside, the decor is simple but clean and charming.
We had the japanese tempura with lotus root, shrimp, sweet potato and other tasties - very good.
Our waitress was very young and still working on her english, but very sweet and adorable. After some back and forth she confirmed that we could get the Ama-Ebi with the fried heads - and they were quite tasty (sometimes the Ama-Ebi, which is shrimp, come without the heads and probably that works fine for most Americans).
We also had the Hamachi - yellowtail which simply melts in your mouth. The Uni - sea urchin was very good, and the spicy salmon skin roll and spicy salmon roll was also very good. The Unagi - eel is delicious. We tried the flounder for something different, and it was okay if a little chewy.
You can read a lot into the fact that we chose to go to Ichidai as one of our first repeat trips. On the scale of 1 to 10 these folks get a 9 just to leave some room available, though it's not clear if anyone in Portland will be able to top Ichidai.
